What's The Difference Between A Day Spa, A Destination Spa and a Resort Spa?

There are several types of spas, including day spas; salon/spas; destination spas; resort spas; urban hotel spas; club spas; medical spas; cruise ship spas; hot springs or mineral springs spas and airport spas.

  • The Day Spa offers a variety of professionally administered spa services, such as massages, facials and body treatments, on a day-use basis. Many offer manicures and pedicures as well.

  • Salon/Spas are combinations of beauty salons and day spas. It allow you to combine spa and beauty services in one day, but the two facilities should be separate so that you have a tranquil spa experience.

  • The destination spa offers a complete spa experience in an overnight setting. Its sole purpose is to provide guests with lifestyle improvement and health enhancement through professionally administered spa services, physical fitness, lectures and spa cuisine.

  • The Resort Spa is just one of the many guest amenities at the resort. It should offer spa treatments, fitness and wellness components and spa cuisine menu choices. This can be a good choice when one person loves spas and the other loves golf.

  • The Urban Hotel Spa is located within an urban hotel, with spa treatments, fitness and wellness components and spa cuisine menu choices. These are often very luxurious facilities with prices somewhat higher than normal.

  • The Club Spa is located in a fitness facility or club. It offers a variety of professionally administered spa services on a day-use basis.

  • The medical spa- sometimes called "medi-spa" -- offers treatments that require a doctor's supervision, such as laser resurfacing and Botox injections, in addition to traditional spa services like European facials and massages.

  • The Cruise Ship Spa is a spa on a cruise ship. It should also have fitness and wellness components and spa cuisine menu choices.

  • Mineral Springs Spa has natural mineral, thermal or seawater on the premiuses that are used in hydrotherapy treatments.

  • The airport spa is located in an airport and offers abbreviated treatments aimed specifically at the traveler, like chair massage and oxygen therapy.
