Service Description:
Author, lecturer and clinical professor describe just some of the professional roles of dermatologic surgeon Gerald Bernstein, M.D. In 1962, Dr. Bernstein completed medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago, followed by a one-year rotating internship at Los Angeles County General Hospital before his three-year dermatology residency in Chicago. Dr. Bernstein was Board Certified in dermatology in 1968. Two years in Bremerton with the Navy sold him on the Northwest, where he has been energetically practicing, teaching and writing ever since.
In 1973 he completed a fellowship in MOHS Micrographic Surgery for the treatment of skin cancer at New York University Medical Center. He pioneered this progressive technique in the Northwest where he has been actively treating skin cancer. In addition, he was Board-certified in dermatopathology in 1976.
In 1988, Dr. Bernstein co-authored “Surgical Anatomy of the Skin”, the first anatomy text for dermatologists. For the past 15 years Dr. Bernstein has been lecturing nationally as an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and other professional organizations. From 1983 to 1986, Dr. Bernstein served as president of the American College of MOHS Microsurgery and has been a member of the Board of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. He also lectures to dermatology residents in his role as Clinical Professor of Medicine (Dermatology) at the University of Washington.
Dr. Bernstein’s post graduate training has centered primarily in skin cancer surgery, and cosmetic surgery such as liposuction, laser surgery, dermabrasion, etc. Having learned the tumescent technique from its originator, Dr. Jeffrey Klein, Dr. Bernstein returned as one of the pioneers of the technique in the Northwest.
Dr. Bernstein continues to enhance his skills in dermatologic cosmetic surgery by working with well-known experts in each respective field throughout the country. He is also lectured and published in various fields of dermatologic surgery and cosmetic surgery including three articles which he co-authored on the safety of liposuction. He has also taught liposuction in seminars nationwide.
